Turnaround: Pak envoy says Jaish chief is not under house arrest

In anothe rexample of what Indian officials are repeatedly desceibe as pakistan dupilicity the country's Hgh Commissioner in New Delhi Shahid Malik said on Wednesday that Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar is not under house arrest, thereby implying that Pakistan is not aware of the jehadi leader's whereabouts. This statement made during the course of a TV interview turns on its head another statement made earlier by Pakistan defence minister Chaudhary Mukhtar Ahmed that Azhar was in police custody.

"We are looking for him. He is not under house arrest. As far as I know, it (news reports of Azhar's house arrest) is wrong. He is not in Pakistan...We don't know where he is,'' said Malik in response to a question on why Pakistan had not handed him over to India till now. Azhar was one of the three terrorists who had been released to ensure the safety of passengers in the Kandahar hijacking case.

The shift on Azhar coincided with clear signs of Pakistan's defiant denial about its responsibility for the terror attack, with the High Commissioner disregarding Kasab's father owning up the terrorist, and bluntly ruling out Indian agencies being given access to Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi, the Lashkar mastermind of the Mumbai massacre.

Malik made these remarks even as foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday again asked Pakistan to crack down on terrorists and hand over fugitives to India.

Malik also denied having received any letter from arrested terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Kasab. The police in Mumbai had said earlier that Kasab had written to the Pakistan High Commission admitting that he was a Pakistani. "Please don't give too much importance to newspaper reports. No letter has been delivered to me or to the (Pak) High Commission,'' stated Malik. He also set aside media reports about Kasab's father in Pakistan accepting that he was a Pakistani saying, "We need something which is incontrovertible and which cannot be challenged in a court of law.''

Malik said Pakistan was also not contemplating giving access to Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks, to FBI for investigation. "At the moment we are not contemplating it...Please allow us to carry forward the process of investigation and see whether there is any merit in involving others or not,'' he stated.

As Malik made these remarks, defence minister Mukhtar Ahmed said in Pakistan on Wednesday that Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed cannot be tried in a court of law because there was not enough evidence against him. He said that this was because India had not shared any evidence with Pakistan.

The High Commissioner, who seemed to be in a denial mode, also said Dawood Ibrahim, underworld don and main accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, was also not in Pakistan as claimed by New Delhi. "Fact of the matter is that he is not in Pakistan,'' said Malik. For good measure, he added that the ISI too has no links with LeT.

Meanwhile, foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday reiterated India's demand that Pakistan hand over 40 fugitives to New Delhi and that Pakistan crack down on terrorists. "We expect Pakistan to act as per their own commitment given by two Presidents. I told them that mere intention or expression of intent to act is not adequate....if that is not followed by action,'' Mukherjee told reporters.

Mukherjee said Pakistan is "obliged'' to implement the UN Security Council resolution declaring Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a front of Lashkar-e-Taiba, as a terror outfit

Emergency Patch For Internet Explorer:Avoid Attacks

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has released an out-of-band security update, MS08-078, to fix a vulnerability in its Internet Explorer Web browser that's being actively exploited.

"At this time, we are aware only of attacks that attempt to use this vulnerability against Windows Internet Explorer 7," said Christopher Budd, Microsoft security response communications lead, in an e-mailed statement. "Our investigation of these attacks so far has verified that they are not successful against customers who have applied the security update. MS08-078 has a maximum severity rating of Critical for all versions of Internet Explorer."

Nonetheless, Microsoft lists Internet Explorer 5.01, 6, and 7 as affected software in its Security Bulletin. It also says separately, in the FAQ section, that Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 is affected.

The vulnerability can be exploited through JavaScript code posted on malicious Web sites. Internet Explorer users may be redirected to these sites through hacked legitimate sites. If the malicious code is successful, it silently downloads malware onto the victim's computer.

Microsoft typically releases software patches, referred to as Security Bulletins, on the second Tuesday of every month. When critical vulnerabilities emerge and are actively exploited, Microsoft often issues a patch as soon as it's ready.

The last such out-of-band patch, Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-067, was released on Oct. 23. It addressed a vulnerability in Windows Server service that affected all currently supported versions of Windows. That vulnerability allowed an attacker to take over affected computers remotely.

When Microsoft issued its out-of-band patch in October, it cited the vulnerability's potential "wormability" -- meaning the hole could be exploited on a massive scale using self-copying malware -- as a reason for its action.

But MS08-078 isn't wormable. "[That] shows that the wormability of a vulnerability is no longer a good indicator of the seriousness of a threat and that these Web-based threats are now much more dangerous than network worms," said Roel Schouwenberg, senior antivirus researcher for Kaspersky Lab, Americas, in an e-mailed statement.

Indeed, Microsoft security researchers estimated that as many as 1 in 500 users of Internet Explorer could have been exposed to malware attempting to exploit the flaw.

"The browser flaw had been disclosed roughly one week ago as a zero-day vulnerability, and active exploits have been around the Internet for that timeframe as well," Qualys CTO Wolfgang Kandek said in an e-mailed statement. "The workarounds provided by Microsoft were very technical and quite cumbersome to implement, making it imperative for Microsoft to release a fix as quickly as possible."

Kandek suggests that Microsoft is at a disadvantage in updating Internet Explorer because its browser doesn't have a built-in update mechanism like other browser makers. Mozilla, for instance, just released Firefox 3.05 to Firefox users through its auto-update system.

Microsoft is urging users of IE to test and deploy this update as soon as possible.

Master Mind Behind the Mumbai Terror Attack Captured

The US-India 48-hour deadline is working. Pakistan on Monday closed down a prominent terror camp run by Lashkar-e-Taiba and arrested LeT commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.
n an operation backed by army

helicopters, Pakistani troops swooped down on the Shawai camp outside Muzaffarabad, and after a scuffle, picked up Lakhvi from among a group of men. While the operation was confirmed by Pakistan army officials, there has been no official reaction from INDIA.

However, privately, government sources said Pakistan needed to "do more". In Washington, the US said there were "some positive steps".

It was the first concrete step from Pakistan to address Indian concerns about terrorist groups like Lashkar, or even to arrest LeT's operational leaders. According to reports, around eight LeT operatives have been picked up. The Indian Government will continue to ask for Lakhvi to be tried in India, while maintaining its demand to arrest other LeT commanders like Muzammil and Zarrar Shah, named by the terrorist nabbed in Mumbai.

The Pakistani action, coming after days of immense bellicosity with India and lusty demands for "solid evidence", has clearly come under the influence of US pressure. Given the nature of the Mumbai attack and the confessions of the arrested terrorist, there was little doubt in the minds of US, Indian and other international investigators about who exactly were involved.

In fact, by the time US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice arrived in Delhi, she had with her names and camps of those involved in the attacks, corroborated by US and indian officials.

India would not have been able to achieve such outcomes by itself, given its lack of levers with Pakistan. But India was very careful not to engage in precipitate action, because it could have threatened the fledgling civilian government, opening it to another military coup, which India did not want.

However, Indian officials said the real action needed to be against the ISI, because closing down a couple of LeT camps was not enough, as long as the ISI retained the ability to create more such outfits. The LeT shares an umbilical relationship with the ISI. Besides, the Jamaat-ud-Dawa remained untouched, though in a separate report, the police chief in Pakistan's Punjab ordered that all religious bodies of banned outfits should be closed. It's unlikely the JuD will be closed because its charity work and schools are popular in Pakistan.

The LeT was banned in 2001 and its chief Hafiz Saeed placed under house arrest after the Parliament attack. But six months down the line, Saeed was out making incendiary speeches against India and recruiting jihadis. Even last Friday, Saeed was at Muridke, delivering a vitriolic speech against India and US.

Further, in an attempt to get India to climb down from its state of anger, the defence committee of the Pakistan cabinet (which is the civilian version of Musharraf's military NSC) asked all Pakistani departments to "act on" information shared by India on the Mumbai terror attacks, adding that Pakistani soil would not be allowed to be used for any "terrorist activity".

It renewed its "offer of full cooperation with India, including intelligence sharing and assistance in investigation as well as setting up of a joint investigative commission", said an official statement. However, it stressed that "all actions taken will be within the ambit of Pakistani law"

Bomb Blast in Mehrauli, Delhi...Again Terror strikes Capital on 27 th

A fortnight after serial blasts rocked the national capital, four people died and 15 got injured when a low intensity bomb exploded near a flower market in Mehrauli. Media says that the Bomb was kept in a Tiffin box. Two guys came in a bike and dropped the Box.

The injured are being rushed to the AIIIMS. Police rushed several teams to the spot.

Reportedly, two unknown bikers left the bomb in a tiffin box. Police however is not confirming the nature of the blast. The blast took place two weeks after the serial explosions in the capital in which 24 people were killed and 100 injured.

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI) Terror returned to Delhi a fortnight after the serial blasts with two motorcycle-borne youth dropping a tiffin bomb in a crowded south Delhi market that exploded killing a young boy and injuring 18 people.
Riding a black motorcycle, the two men in black dress and wearing helmets, dropped a black polythene bag containing a tiffin box opposite an electronic goods shop in the flower market in Mehrauli at about 2.15 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H S Dhaliwal told reporters.

A 13-year-old boy picked it up to give it back to the bikers. They refused and fled the place but the boy was still keen on giving it to them when it exploded killing him instantaneously and injuring 18 others.

Eleven of the injured were rushed to AIIMS where doctors said six were in critical condition. Five of them suffered serious head injuries. Three or four of the injured could be required to be operated upon, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta told reporters.

The explosive shattered the window panes of several adjacent shops in the market located close to the historic Qutab Minar, which was bustling with shoppers.

The blast, which caused a crater, left a gory scene where blood was splattered on the road along with shattered glass panes and furniture.

The explosion comes exactly two weeks after the national capital was rocked by five near simultaneous blasts in which 24 people were killed.

There were reports that police in the neighbouring Faridabad district in Haryana had tipped off about the possibility of explosions today but Gupta asked the media not to speculate.

Glamorous Russian model wins Women's World Chess Championship

Queen of Chess: Alexandra Kosteniuk became a chess grandmaster aged 14 Photo: KOSTENIUK.COM

Alexandra Kosteniuk, 23, has worked as a catwalk and swimsuit model to raise the profile of the game.

She also sells sultry semi-clad photographs of herself, and has made a 36-minute video which shows her "doing exercises on Miami beach".

The modelling exploits have raised eyebrows among critics, who believe it distracts from the intellectual importance of chess.

But Miss Kosteniuk has more than proved her talent for the game after being crowned "Queen of Chess" at the women's championships held in Russia.

She said: "Modelling is not a job. It is just a hobby, like reading books.

"I want people to see there is a fun side to chess. It can be made as exciting as soccer or tennis. Things are changing. I am clever, so I can play chess; and I am not so ugly, so I can model."

At 14 years old, Miss Kosteniuk became a chess grandmaster, the youngest woman in the world to attain the title.

She quickly made a name for herself on the international stage by reaching the final of the world championship in 2001, aged 17, and becoming the European champion in 2004.

And at the age of 20 she achieved the International Grandmaster title, becoming the tenth women to have received the highest title awarded by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Last Wednesday, Miss Kosteniuk won the Women's World Chess Championship 2008, after beating the Chinese prodigy Hou Yifan in the final.

But her fans say her greatest achievement has been to give the game of chess a sexy image, which has attracted a new young following.

She is the host of a popular podcast "Chess is Cool" which informs listeners about current chess events, and has adopted the motto "beauty and intelligence can go together" and proved her worth as a model.

Miss Kosteniuk's career began after her father Konstantin left his army job when she was young, to devote his time to training her.

She said: "I can remember when my father introduced me to exercises.

"He wrote on little cards the squares of the chessboard, like E4, A1 - or even false ones like E9 to test me. Then he would show me cards, one quickly after the other, and I'd have to say whether the square was white or black on the board."

Mr Kosteniuk even taught his daughter to win a chess game blindfolded in three moves when she was just five, in a bid to "exercise her brain".

Miss Kosteniuk is married to Swiss-born Diego Garces, who is 25 years her elder. In April last year she gave birth to her daughter Francesca Maria. The baby was two-and-a-half months premature and stayed in hospital for eight weeks, but has since made a full recovery.

Pictorial explaination about BIG BANG

According to the Big Bang model, the universe expanded from an extremely dense and hot state and continues to expand today. A common and useful analogy explains that space itself is expanding, carrying galaxies with it, like raisins in a rising loaf of bread. General relativistic cosmologies, however, do not actually ascribe any 'physicality' to space.

BIG BANG INFORMATION

The Big Bang is the cosmological model of the universe that is best supported by all lines of scientific evidence and observation. The essential idea is that the universe has expanded from a primordial hot and dense initial condition at some finite time in the past and continues to expand to this day. Georges Lemaître proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe, although he called it his 'hypothesis of the primeval atom'. The framework for the model relies on Albert Einstein's General Relativity as formulated by Alexander Friedmann. After Edwin Hubble discovered in 1929 that the distances to far away galaxies were generally proportional to their redshifts, this observation was taken to indicate that all very distant galaxies and clusters have an apparent velocity directly away from our vantage point. The farther away, the higher the apparent velocity.[1] If the distance between galaxy clusters is increasing today, everything must have been closer together in the past. This idea has been considered in detail back in time to extreme densities and temperatures, and large particle accelerators have been built to experiment on and test such conditions, resulting in significant confirmation of the theory. But these accelerators can only probe so far into such high energy regimes. Without any evidence associated with the earliest instant of the expansion, the Big Bang theory cannot and does not provide any explanation for such an initial condition, rather explaining the general evolution of the universe since that instant. The observed abundances of the light elements throughout the cosmos closely match the calculated predictions for the formation of these elements from nuclear processes in the rapidly expanding and cooling first minutes of the universe, as logically and quantitatively detailed according to Big Bang nucleosynthesis.
Fred Hoyle is credited with coining the phrase 'Big Bang' during a 1949 radio broadcast, as a derisive reference to a theory he did not subscribe to.[2] Hoyle later helped considerably in the effort to figure out the nuclear pathway for building certain heavier elements from lighter ones. After the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation in 1964, and especially when its collective frequencies sketched out a blackbody curve, most scientists were fairly convinced by the evidence that some Big Bang scenario must have occurred.

Scientists start up "Big Bang" Experiment

Scientists at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) started up a huge particle-smashing machine on Wednesday, aiming to re-enact the conditions of the "Big Bang" that created the universe.
Experiments in the Large Hadron Collider, a 10 billion Swiss franc (5 billion pounds) accelerator built underneath the Swiss-French border, could unlock the remaining secrets of particle physics and answer questions about the universe and its origins.
"There are two emotions, the pleasure of completing a great task and the hope of great discoveries ahead of us," said CERN Director General Robert Aymar.
The giant accelerator's first task is to send a particle beam in one direction around its 27-km (17-mile) circumference, and then one in the other direction to test if the path is clear

Scientists around the world are eagerly anticipating data on those minuscule crashes. One possibility is that they will cause the creation of matter -- proving correct the theory that there exists a "Higgs Boson" that gives matter its mass.
Doomsday writers have also fanned fears that the experiment could create anti-matter, or black holes, spurring unprecedented public interest in particle physics ahead of the machine's start-up. CERN has insisted that such concerns are unfounded and that the Large Hadron Collider is safe.

BIG BANG Experiment:INDIAN ROLE

Wednesday in the Alps along the Swiss-French border, it will kick off one of the largest man-made experiments in history. Interestingly, it’s not just a massive science experiment being conducted by CERN, a French acronym for the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, but also one of the biggest IT projects. India's contribution to the $10-billion effort in search of the universe’s missing matter by smashing particles like during the Big Bang is equally impressive. Around 200 of the 2,000 scientists doing the experiment are from India. The entire system comprising 1,232 cryo magnets, each weighing about 32 tonne, is sitting on precision motion positioning systems developed, among other places, at the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, by the Electronics Corporation of India. Indian institutes like Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, RRCAT, Indore, Benares Hindu University and varsities of Delhi, Jaipur, Punjab have contributed significantly to the experiment and will also be involved in analysing the collision debris.Says Amit Roy, director of Delhi-based Inter-University Accelerator Centre (earlier called Nuclear Science Centre): “About 200 scientists involved in the experiment are of Indian origin. “ “India has also been involved in supplying material to build the tunnel and several Indians have played a key role in the whole project,” Mr Royadded. The monetary contribution by India is $25 million. The prominent Indians who are part of the project include Atul Gurtu of TIFR, an expert on particle colliders, Vikas Sinha of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, who created a chip to process signals, and Vinod Chauhan employed by CERN to lead the group which tested the magnets. Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology director Vinod Chandra Sahni says: “No collisions will take place today. September 10 simply marks the launch wherein two beams will be sent in the tunnel, one clockwise and the other anti-clockwise. The particle smashing at close to speed of light (about 300,000 km per second) will start on October 21. Some particles will collide, triggering new particles that could help scientists understand the universe better.” The tunnel, buried 100 metres underground, is lined with sensors and 1,600 superconducting magnets across eight sectors, which are held at an operating temperature of 271 degrees below zero — colder than outer space. The LHC accelerator, which is accurate to a nanosecond, will be used to slam particles into each other to try to recreate the conditions at the beginning of time — as in the Big Bang. Data from the collision, about 15 petabytes (1 petabyte is quadrillion bytes or 1,000 terabytes) a year will be studied around the world by some 100,000 computers across 50 countries. Within a year, the particle accelerator’s experiments will have spewed enough data to fill a pile of compact discs 12 miles high. India is part of the world-wide computational grid that will help analyse this data. But the massive experiment is not without its share of controversy. Cynics believe that all the particle smashing will create a massive black hole, sucking life out of earth, if things don’t follow the planned script. However, Mr Roy adds: “The scientific community the world over is eagerly looking at the experiment. The claims of this experiment turning out to be a disaster are rather exaggerated and based on wrong calculations.” Brusing aside fears of the experiment going wrong, geeks at CERN believe that they are going to find the so-called God-like particle dubbed Higgs Boson, which will offer clues about dark matter and other missing links of physics. This, in turn, will accelerate our own understanding of life. If they don’t find that, they still hope to lay their hands on something exciting and worthwhile out of the tunnel. Much like one of CERN’s alumni, Tim Berners-Lee, stumbled upon the internet and invented the first web browser in 1989 to initially help physicists worldwide to swap notes!
